October 25th

October 25th

Today in class we completed the following tasks:
Warm up Question:
The strength of the force of friction depends on two factors:
After Warm up, students worked on the Friction Jigsaw Activity which was posted on October 24th with the link and directions.
We did not finish, we will work on this tomorrow in class and proceed to our Friction Lab Activity.

No Homework was given tonight, however students will receive homework tomorrow in class. :)
Students can work on their ACIDS and BASES project however :)

October 24th - Monday

Warm up question: Identify the four types of friction
After warm –up: Review activity on Acids and Bases:
Task Card #21
Acids and Bases Reading Sheet (Students will refer to page 145 to answer the following questions about indicators:
  1. What is an indicator?
  2. What are two kinds of indicators used by scientists?
  • ACIDS AND BASES LAB
After review on acids and bases:
Introduction to Jigsaw activity on Friction:
Each student will draw a number. This number determines which expert group you will be a part of. Join your expert group to research your assigned type of friction using the online textbook and the links below. You will need to be able to do the following:  Timeline: Due end of class period on Tuesday
         Define your type of friction.
Give an example of this type from your everyday experience.
Describe an example of a technology designed to reduce or overcome this type of friction.
Describe an example of a technology designed to take advantage of this type of friction
HOMEWORK:
Project 2: ACIDS AND BASES THINK TIC TAC TOE ACTIVITY SHEET (DUE TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY)

Online Web Activity Assignment (Friction)  http://teacher.scholastic.com/dirtrep/friction

October 17th - October 21st

October 17th – 21st
Quick notes: Acids and Bases (add to Acids and Bases section of your ISN)
Who’s ever had heartburn or a bad stomach ache? Did you take a TUMS or Pepto-Bismol?
These are both antacids. They contain weak bases that sooth your heartburn by reacting with and neutralizing the acid in your stomach.
Acids and Bases Neutralize one another because the the H+ of the acid and the OH- of the base form H2O…WATER!
After quick notes review on acids and bases:
Video on Friction: Posing question
What would the world be like without friction? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUfqjSeeZng
Note=taking on Forces (ADD TO FORCE AND MOTION SECTION OF ISN)
If objects in motion tend to stay in motion, why don’t moving objects keep moving forever?
Things don’t keep moving forever because there’s almost always an unbalanced force acting upon them.
A book sliding across a table slows down and stops because of the force of friction.

If you throw a ball upwards it will eventually slow down and fall because of the force of gravity
Newton’s First Law of Motion:
MASS is the measure of the amount of matter in an object.
It is measured in Kilograms
The law states: Unless acted upon by an unbalanced force, this golf ball would sit on the tee forever.
What is this unbalanced force that acts on an object in motion? FRICTION

There are four main types of friction:
      Sliding friction: ice skating
      Rolling friction: bowling
Fluid friction (air or liquid): air or water resistance
Static friction: initial friction when moving an object
AIR RESISTANCE:
A type of frictional force that opposes the motion of objects that move through the air.
Causes objects to fall with different accelerations and different speeds.
Acts in the direction opposite to the velocity of an object moving in air.
·         Size of the force depends on the size and shape of the object

TERMINAL VELOCITY:
As an object falls, the downward force of gravity causes the object to accelerate. As the speed of the object increases, the upward force of air resistance also increases.
When the upward air resistance force equals the downward force of gravity, terminal velocity is reached – the velocity becomes constant.
Depends on the size, shape, and mass of the object.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:
       Read “Types of Friction” https://csoscience.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/3_friction10912.pdf

Video on Acids:
Before the video, fill out the section for What do you know about acids?
After the video, discuss the after section
Complete the activity: Which are acids
Add to ISN (ACIDS AND BASES SECTION)
Indicators such as litmus paper can identify whether a solution contains an acid or a base.
The pH scale is used to describe how acidic or basic a solution is. (pH is also the measure of hydrogen concentration)
       pH = 7    is neutral
       pH > 7    is basic
       pH < 7    is acidic
Quick Lab Check:
Is vinegar an acid or base?
When you used the blue litmus paper; what color did it turn?
Which color on the ph scale is vinegar closely corresponding with?
       Conclusion:
Students were given a pH scale to label and color code to place in ISN.

October 10th - October 14th

Monday – October 10th
Final day to complete the UNIT TEST.
After unit test: internet activity sheet on the following:
a.       Phases changes of matter
b.      Acids and Bases web quest
Tuesday – October 11th
PPT Notes on Force:
Force: Any influence that can cause a change in an object’s motion
Force defined as:
A push or pull that one object exerts on another.
       Has a size and direction.
       Measured in newtons (N).
Net force: The combination of all forces on an object
Balanced forces:
       Do not change motion.
       Cancel each other.
Combine to produce a net force of zero.

Unbalanced forces:
Do not have the same strength (size).
          Cause acceleration.

After PPT: Activity Lab:

Homework: ACIDS AND BASES READING SHEET
Wednesday – October 12th
Tug of War Lab (Focus: balanced and unbalanced forces)
Thursday – October 13th
Quick check: Concept Map on Balanced and unbalanced forces
Practice on calculating the net force:
 Notes on friction:
A force that opposes the sliding motion of two surfaces.
Rule of friction – Friction always acts in a direction to oppose motion.
Depends on the materials the surfaces are made from and the roughness of the surfaces.
Newton’s First Law of Motion:
An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
